The story of the Rocca family started in Barbaresco during the 1940s, with Giacomo Rocca producing wines from the family vineyard, which continued over the years by his son. During the 1960s, Albino inherited a few sites around Barbaresco, mainly increasing the holdings of the Roccas. Furthered was the work his son Angelo put in the vineyards by limiting the number of herbicides and fungicides used. It ultimately pushes for better winemaking and ageing techniques. The first single-cru bottling happened in the 1980s with the 'Bric Ronchi' and 'Loreto' vineyards and, in 2004, only used the large 20 hectolitres barrels. Today, Monica, Daniela, Paola and Carlo run the estate.

Cotta' cru is located in the municipality of Neive, first purchased by the family in the 1970s but only bottled separately in 2015. It is considered to be the historical vineyard of Barbaresco. The vines were planted in 1962 and 1996. As the others crus of Rocca, the wine spent at least 20 months in large German and Slovenian large oak casks before bottling. 'The 2018 Barbaresco Cotta shows the mid-palate pliancy and depth that is typical of this site, but in the gracious, understated style that defines the Rocca Barbarescos today, especially in this vintage. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spices and leather all flesh out in the glass.' 93/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
